The smartphone market in September 2026 has entered an unusual period of new product launches; a wave that begins at the IFA Berlin exhibition and will continue with Apple's big event on September 9.
According to ITNA and published estimates, more than 20 new phones may be introduced this month alone; a competition that directly pits Chinese companies against Apple.
IFA; the start of a new wave
The IFA exhibition in Berlin, following the tradition of previous years, is one of the first stops of this wave.
Tecno is set to showcase an almost bezel-less concept phone and TCL will likely introduce new models in the Nxtpaper family.
Xiaomi is also preparing for its first appearance at IFA and may introduce the Xiaomi 18 Fold at the event; a product that could heat up the foldable phone market more than before.
But this is only the beginning of the story. Huawei has scheduled the release of the new generation three-fold Mate XT 2 in China for September 7 and the introduction of the Mate 90 family has also been suggested.
Later in the month, Xiaomi will likely turn to the Xiaomi 18 family and its pro models. Vivo has also confirmed the launch of the flagship X500 series in September and Honor will unveil the new generation of its Magic flagships.
There have also been multiple reports about the Oppo Find X10 series and the OnePlus 16, although the release timing of some of these products is not yet certain.
All eyes on Apple
Despite the large number of products, Apple's September 9 event will likely be the most important event of the month. Apple is set to introduce a new generation of iPhones at the ceremony and the company's first foldable iPhone is expected to be a focal point.
The event is also particularly important from a management perspective; as it will be Apple's first major product introduction ceremony since the start of John Ternus's tenure as CEO. Apple has previously announced September 9 for the iPhone introduction event.
The foldable iPhone could be a major milestone for Apple.
Samsung and Chinese companies have been active in this market for years, and Apple's entry could take competition in the foldable phone segment to a new level. Analysts expect demand for these products to increase in the coming years.
Why are so many phones being introduced this year?
One reason for the crowded launch calendar is the change in the timing of Qualcomm's flagship chip introductions. The company plans to hold the Snapdragon Summit from September 22 to 24; an event where the new generation of Snapdragon 8 series chips is expected to be introduced.
As a result, some manufacturers are trying to bring their products to market before the next generation of chips is introduced, while others will postpone their flagship launches until after the event.
However, the high number of new phones does not necessarily mean a broad technological revolution. Many of the new models will likely be more incremental updates in processor, camera, battery and price. In contrast, foldable and three-fold phones remain among the few products that can make a noticeable change in phone form factor.
According to The Verge, this September has effectively become the strong return of a phenomenon known as "Techtember"; a period in which technology companies release their important products before the year-end shopping season. In 2026, it seems the smartphone market has taken the largest share of this wave.
In such circumstances, the competition is not only about technical specifications; companies are trying to establish their positions in the AI market, foldable phones and high-end flagships before the shopping season begins.
If Apple's foldable iPhone is finally introduced, September 2026 could become one of the most important turning points in the smartphone market.
