A sudden and widespread technical outage affected several of the world's largest AI platforms and disrupted users' access to several prominent chatbots.
During this outage, services such as ChatGPT owned by OpenAI, Claude from Anthropic, Gemini owned by Google and Grok from X encountered various issues.
A sharp rise in outage reports
According to ITNA, data from the website Downdetector, which monitors the status of online services and user reports of outages, indicate a significant increase in reports related to these platforms.
User reports were not limited to AI services, and simultaneous disruptions were observed in some major internet infrastructures and services including Cloudflare and Amazon Web Services. This has raised the possibility that the source of some problems may be shared infrastructure or underlying services used by the AI platforms.
However, the exact cause of this widespread outage is not yet known, and it is still not possible to confidently establish a direct link between the issues of different services.
Cloudflare's status also encountered problems
Cloudflare's service status page also shows two technical issues that could be temporally related to the recent outage. However, these incidents have been logged in the service status for past days, and there is not yet sufficient evidence to confirm their connection to the recent downtime.
For this reason, determining the root cause of the outage requires further examination of the infrastructures of the affected services and official reports from their providers.
What problems did users face?
Reports recorded on global outage-tracking websites show that the number of user complaints rose to the thousands just minutes after the problem began.
The reported problems varied, but several issues were more frequently repeated than others. Some users could not sign into their accounts, some encountered error messages about being unable to connect to servers, and in some cases the text-generation capability failed completely.
The simultaneous breadth of outages across several major AI platforms, along with reports of problems in some infrastructure services, has underscored the importance of examining these services' dependence on shared infrastructure.
It is currently unclear how persistent this outage will be and whether all affected services were harmed by a single common source. The precise answer to this question depends on official information from the providers and the identification of the root cause of the outage.
