The CEO of Anthropic, within a 72-hour span, went from the target of a critical campaign in political circles to the subject of a sketch on Saturday Night Live (SNL) and then a guest at a private dinner hosted by the President of the United States at the White House.
According to ITNA citing Axios, Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, although not seeking such a position, has now become one of the most recognizable figures in the artificial intelligence industry in the United States.
An unconventional spokesperson for a transformative industry
Amodei, who is originally a physicist, has ties to the Effective Altruism movement, and Axios reports that some inside and outside the company have likened his management style at Anthropic to “leading an intellectual movement.”
His bluntness in speaking, especially about catastrophic risks from AI, has gained him both supporters and critics; although his stance has remained consistent over the years.
Axios writes that a short comedic sketch on Saturday Night Live depicted what sometimes disappoints his allies: calls for more-and slower-regulation to increase safety, while Anthropic moves rapidly to position itself at the forefront of the field.
Also, a public offering of the company’s shares in the near future could make Amodei one of the world’s billionaires.
Three tense days
According to the report, last Thursday Axios reported on a memo that was circulating at the White House attempting to portray Amodei as a symbol of the Effective Altruism movement, which has recently been targeted by conservatives who favor more powerful AI development.
Anthropic has said that Amodei does not consider himself an Effective Altruist, but he sympathizes with some principles of the movement.
By Sunday, Axios reported that Donald Trump personally invited Amodei to dinner; a dinner that critics had tried to prevent by directly criticizing him to the President hours earlier. Between those two events, the SNL sketch portrayed him as someone who can hardly finish a sentence without warning about humanity’s destruction by AI.
Axios views these events as a sign of the company’s tumultuous relationship with the government in recent months.
Significant growth despite controversy
Despite negative media attention, Anthropic has grown at an unprecedented pace. According to the report, the company’s annual revenue is on track to pass $100 billion, more than ten times last year’s figure.
If the IPO succeeds and this trend continues, Anthropic could rank among the top 50 U.S. companies by revenue and among the top 10 by market value by year’s end. This is while the company did not exist six years ago.
Axios concludes by writing that every symbol and influential figure does not necessarily look like a movie star or a theatrical orator.
