The film “Avengers: Endgame” has once again returned to the top of the list of highest-grossing films in cinema history.

According to ITNA quoting TechSpot, the re-release titled “Avengers: Endgame Encore” has pushed the film’s total global box office to $2.9255 billion and caused it to surpass James Cameron’s “Avatar.” “Avatar” has so far grossed $2.9237 billion worldwide, and the difference between the two films is very small.

The new version of “Endgame” contains about four minutes of added content across four scenes. These scenes include parts related to the upcoming film “Avengers: Doomsday,” which is set to be released in December. In this way, Marvel Studios has used the re-release of an older film as part of the marketing campaign for its new release.

“Endgame” earned $86 million worldwide in its first weekend of the re-release and became the second-highest opening for a re-release in history; a record that still belongs to the 2012 3D re-release of “Titanic.” The film also topped the domestic chart with $26 million in North America.

Of course, the film’s revenue dropped significantly in the second week. “Endgame” made $4.4 million in North America and $14.4 million in international markets, bringing its second-weekend total to $18.8 million. Despite this decline, the first week’s revenue was enough to return the film to the top of the chart.

The rivalry between “Endgame” and “Avatar” over the global box office record is nothing new. “Avatar” held the top spot for about a decade after its initial 2009 release, but “Endgame” surpassed it in July 2019. However, the 2021 re-release of “Avatar,” prior to the release of “Avatar: The Way of Water,” returned that film to number one.

Now Marvel, using the same rerelease strategy, has reclaimed the record; although the very small gap between the two films suggests that “Avatar” could regain the top spot with another re-release.
