Carl Pei, CEO of Nothing, criticized Apple's new foldable phone, the iPhone Duo, and believes this product, priced at $1,999, is not worth buying.
According to Eitna quoting Phonearena, in his view, the lack of Face ID facial recognition, camera limitations, and removal of some important software features are the three main weaknesses of this expensive phone.
Pei's first criticism concerns the removal of Face ID; a feature that has been present in Apple's main phones since the iPhone X. It is said that the device's thickness of only 5.2 millimeters when open and its dual-display design have made it difficult to use the camera systems required for Face ID. One of the solutions suggested by users is to use a Touch ID fingerprint sensor for the outer display and Face ID for the inner display.
The second major criticism relates to the cameras. The iPhone Duo is equipped with a 12-megapixel selfie camera; while the iPhone 18 Pro has an 18-megapixel selfie camera. Also, this phone lacks a dedicated telephoto camera and a LiDAR sensor; two features that can be useful for optical zoom, night photography, and depth detection. Furthermore, some professional camera controls, such as shutter speed and aperture adjustment, are not offered in this model.
According to reports, Apple intends to add Face ID and a telephoto camera to future generations of its foldable phone; but these changes may be delayed until the third generation.
Despite these limitations, the iPhone Duo has advantages such as high build quality, an almost unnoticeable display crease, 120 Hz ProMotion refresh rate, the powerful A20 Pro chip, and support for the Apple Pencil with a USB-C port. Preorders for this phone begin on October 16 and its release is scheduled for October 23.
