According to a report by Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, Apple is preparing a new generation iMac with an M6 chip and intends to launch the device before the end of this calendar year. It is said the new iMac will enter the market with new color options in addition to the new chip.
This update comes after a long period during which the iMac did not receive regular updates. During this time Apple skipped some generations of its chips for the iMac and still has not introduced a version of the device with a larger display.
Instead, Apple has directed users who needed higher performance to products such as the Mac Studio and Mac mini alongside the Studio Display.
New colors for the iMac
The new iMac is expected to ship with several new color options, but the published report does not provide further details about these colors.
In Apple’s last major iMac update, which occurred in 2024 with the M4 chip, it kept the same seven-color lineup but made changes to the tones of the device’s colors.
Introducing new colors could change the iMac’s appearance after a while and coincide with internal hardware updates and the device’s migration to Apple’s next-generation chips.
A busy Apple autumn with new Macs
The new iMac is only one of several Mac models Apple is expected to unveil in the autumn season. Among the anticipated products are a MacBook Pro model with a new design, a touch display and Tandem OLED technology, as well as a 14-inch MacBook Pro equipped with the M6 chip.
Updates to the Mac Studio and Mac mini have also been suggested. If these plans materialize, the coming autumn could be one of Apple’s busiest periods for introducing new Mac family products.
M6 chip with 2-nanometer process technology
The M6 chip is expected to be one of Apple’s major steps in developing Mac chips; it is said this chip will be Apple’s first processor produced on a 2-nanometer process technology.
Leaked information also indicates Apple may drop some versions such as M6 Pro, M6 Max and M6 Ultra; a move that could help the company accelerate its transition to the next generation of its chips, namely the M7 series.
However, further details about the new iMac, including the exact release date, price, final specifications and available colors, have not yet been officially announced by Apple.
