Sleep disorders are among the common problems of the modern era, encompassing a wide range from insomnia and difficulty maintaining sleep to excessive daytime sleepiness, restless legs syndrome, and obstructive sleep apnea. These issues not only cast a shadow on concentration, mood, and daily quality of life, but also have profound consequences for overall bodily health.

Research indicates that sleep disorders, in addition to underlying conditions such as diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular diseases, are associated with a broad spectrum of psychological factors, especially stress, anxiety, and everyday tensions. On the other hand, chronic sleep deprivation can disrupt the balance of hormones that regulate appetite and increase insulin resistance, which in turn can lead to a chain of metabolic disorders.

Treatment methods for these disorders, depending on the underlying cause, include various approaches, the most important of which are:

Cognitive-behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I): This method, aimed at regulating regular sleep schedules, teaching relaxation techniques, and correcting unhealthy habits and the sleep environment, is recognized as the first-line treatment for many sleep disorders.

Light therapy (phototherapy): In cases where circadian rhythm disorders are evident, the use of light therapy under specialist supervision can be effective.

Pharmacotherapy: Physicians may recommend prescription medications for limited periods, especially in cases of acute insomnia. However, it is emphasized that long-term reliance on sleeping medications without medical supervision is never advised.

Supplements and alternative therapies: Substances such as melatonin and some herbal extracts are used in certain cases, but prior consultation with a physician to avoid potential side effects is absolutely essential.

According to ITNA, to improve sleep quality, specialists have offered practical recommendations, among the most important of which are adhering to fixed bedtimes and wake times, avoiding long naps, refraining from caffeine and tobacco use in the hours leading up to night, and providing a dark, quiet, and cool bedroom environment. Engaging in relaxing activities such as reading or meditation before sleep also plays an effective role in improving the quality of nighttime rest.

For children, setting regular sleep schedules, creating a consistent bedtime routine, and limiting the use of electronic devices and stimulating activities before sleep are among the key strategies.

Finally, it is emphasized that if sleep problems persist for more than a few days or occur repeatedly in a way that affects daily functioning and quality of life, consulting a specialist physician for accurate diagnosis and selection of appropriate treatment is unavoidable.
