Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, has recently been at the center of attention in the AI industry. After appearing on an American television program, he is now headed to the White House for a private dinner with Donald Trump, the President of the United States.

According to reports, this meeting will be Amodei’s first face-to-face encounter with Trump. Axios first reported the dinner and a source close to the Anthropic CEO’s schedule confirmed it. The meeting comes amid a relationship between Anthropic and the Trump administration that has seen many ups and downs in recent months.

Dispute over the future and safety of artificial intelligence

In recent weeks, Amodei has been one of the prominent figures in debates about the pace of AI development and the potential risks of advanced models. In September, he warned in a lengthy article that the development of powerful models should proceed at a pace that allows their risks to be assessed and controlled.

In contrast, Trump has taken a different stance regarding calls for greater restrictions on the AI industry. In recent remarks he described concerns about catastrophic AI scenarios as exaggerated and emphasized the continued rapid development of the technology and maintaining America’s superiority. Trump has also stated that his administration will use the term “superintelligence” instead of “artificial intelligence” in official documents.

However, the disagreement between the two sides is not limited to the pace of AI development and has in recent months extended to Anthropic’s cooperation with the U.S. government.

Anthropic’s clash with the Pentagon

One of the major points of contention has been how Claude models are used in U.S. national security projects. Anthropic had stated that it does not support the use of its models for mass surveillance of American citizens and for fully autonomous weapons, and had exempted these two cases from its safety allowances.

In February 2026 the Department of Defense threatened to designate Anthropic as a “supply chain risk” if those restrictions remained. The department ultimately took that step and Anthropic challenged it in court. The company itself said it did not consider the decision legally defensible.

In August, a U.S. federal judge found the Pentagon’s punitive action against Anthropic to be unlawful and lacking sufficient basis, but the dispute was not completely resolved. In September, a senior Defense Department official said Anthropic is still considered a “supply chain risk” in relation to the U.S. defense industry.

Meanwhile, officials from the Trump administration have shown signs of improving relations in recent weeks. U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said in early September that the administration trusts Anthropic and that the company "has returned to the right path." Nevertheless, statements from various officials indicate the government’s stance toward the company is not entirely unified.

Why does this dinner matter?

The meeting comes at a time when the U.S. government is trying to build closer ties with leaders of major AI companies. Trump is expected to host several senior tech executives in the coming days to discuss the future of AI and America’s competition in the field.

On the other hand, Anthropic is one of the most important companies developing advanced AI models, and the Claude model is used in areas such as programming, data analysis, and enterprise applications. The company also recently introduced Claude Opus 5.5, which, alongside increased technical capabilities, has undergone broader safety evaluations.

Amodei and Trump’s meeting could therefore be an opportunity for direct discussion about issues that have caused tension between Anthropic and the government in recent months; from how AI models are used in defense to regulation, safety, and the pace of technological development.

According to TechCrunch, the dinner was scheduled after Amodei did not attend a previous state dinner, and then Trump personally invited him to meet at the White House.

At the same time, Axios reported that some of Amodei’s critics, ahead of the meeting, have tried to bring documents and critical materials about his views on AI safety to the White House. This suggests the upcoming meeting is not merely a ceremonial encounter between a president and a tech CEO and could be significant for the ongoing complex relationship between the U.S. government and one of the country’s leading AI labs.
