Minecraft is set to undergo one of the biggest changes in its history in 2027; Mojang is preparing an entirely new dimension called The Sift that will be released for the Java and Bedrock editions and will expand the game's world for the first time in over 14 years.
Minecraft has so far had three main dimensions: Overworld, Nether and End. Although Mojang has added various biomes, creatures, structures and mechanics to these worlds over the years, the core dimensional structure of the game remained unchanged. The Sift is set to change that and will be the fourth explorable world of Minecraft.
The Sift is not just a new area
The difference between The Sift and a regular update is that players will not encounter a new environment within the same previous world; instead they will enter an independent dimension with its own rules and features.
Mojang has described this dimension as a colorful and vibrant environment with new creatures, biomes and gameplay rules. Players can explore it, gather resources, build and face dangers that do not exist in the Overworld.
So far two regions of The Sift have been introduced named Meadows and Carapace. However, Mojang has deliberately kept details of many other areas hidden so that players can discover part of it themselves when they enter this dimension.
The released images and videos also show that The Sift is visually significantly different from Minecraft's familiar environments and is intended to have an independent identity among the game's four dimensions.
New rules and dangers you must learn
The Sift is not simply going to be a collection of fresh landscapes. According to published information, this dimension will have its own gameplay rules and some blocks and environmental features can be dangerous to players.
There will also be new creatures in this world. Some of them can align with the player while others are threats. These features can change the way exploration and survival work compared to the usual Overworld experience.
However, it is still unclear exactly how players will enter The Sift. Mojang has not yet announced an exact release date for this dimension and has not provided full details about the access mechanics, all areas, creatures and its rules.
The Sift appeared earlier than mainline Minecraft
You don't have to wait until 2027 to see the first examples of The Sift. This dimension has appeared in Minecraft Dungeons II before being added to the main Minecraft.
In that game, mysterious rifts form in the world that can transport players to The Sift. There players encounter different environments and threats and can become familiar with some features of the new world.
However, the version of The Sift in Minecraft Dungeons II is not necessarily a full representation of the version that will be added to mainline Minecraft in 2027. Mojang has emphasized that these two experiences can differ in details and design.
Why does adding a new dimension matter?
The importance of The Sift is not limited to adding a larger map to Minecraft. This is the first time in over 14 years that the game's dimensional structure has been expanded with the introduction of an entirely new world.
Since its release Minecraft has given players a great deal of freedom to explore, build and survive. Adding an independent dimension can expand this cycle with new resources, environments, creatures and mechanics and could even make travel between different worlds more significant.
Mojang first introduced The Sift at the Minecraft Live event and confirmed that this dimension will be released in 2027 for the Java and Bedrock editions. However, an exact release date has not yet been determined.
As a result, what we know so far about The Sift is mostly an initial look at Minecraft's fourth world. More areas, creatures and mechanics will likely be introduced as the release approaches, and it remains to be seen how this new dimension will ultimately change Minecraft's multi-year experience.
