Huawei continues to adhere to unconventional designs in the laptop world. The company has introduced the new generation MateBook Fold Ultimate Design, which combines a large foldable display with the compact dimensions of a traditional laptop. This device is the second generation of the series and is offered with a new processor, HarmonyOS 6.1, and a redesigned hinge.
In the open state, the device has an 18-inch dual-layer OLED display. When folded, its size approaches that of a 13-inch laptop. This way the user has a large screen for work, design, and entertainment, and a smaller device for transport. The screen resolution in the open state is 3296×2472 pixels with a 4:3 ratio, and when folded, a 13-inch display with a resolution of 2472×1648 is available to the user. The display brightness reaches 1600 nits, the screen-to-body ratio is 92 percent, and LTPO technology supports adaptive refresh rates. Huawei has used ultra-thin UTG glass to protect the screen. This panel has also received SGS certification for impact and drop resistance.
The HUAWEI M-Pen 3 stylus is also natively supported. In the open state you can take notes, draw and design, and annotate documents. For use as a laptop, the lower half of the screen turns into a virtual keyboard and touchpad. In other modes it can also be used as a tablet or a large workspace.
At the heart of the device is the Kirin X90 Plus processor. Huawei says its overall performance is about 25 percent better than the previous generation. Depending on configuration, up to 32 GB of RAM and 2 TB of internal storage are available. Three variants are offered: 24 GB + 512 GB, 24 GB + 1 TB, and 32 GB + 2 TB. The device has an 8-megapixel camera, Wi‑Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, and satellite connectivity. A 74.69 Wh (6400 mAh) battery powers the device.
One of the most important parts of the design is the new hinge. Huawei calls it the "waterdrop hinge" and has used zirconium-based liquid metal components in its construction. The goal is greater durability and smoother opening and closing. This hinge allows the screen to be positioned at various angles and ensures the device closes more securely.
Despite the large display, the device weighs about 1.16 kilograms. Its thickness is stated as 7.3 millimeters when open and 14.9 millimeters when closed. According to Huawei, the dual-layer OLED structure improves energy efficiency and display lifespan and includes technologies to reduce light reflection.
The price of the MateBook Fold Ultimate Design starts at around $3,700 and the most expensive model is about $4,440. Sales have begun in China, but Huawei has not yet announced a global release.
