Volkswagen has officially confirmed that the ID. Tiguan is on the way and its first full reveal will take place in early October.
According to Eitna citing Arenaev, this all-electric SUV is set to be offered alongside Tiguan models equipped with combustion and hybrid powertrains and will play an important role in Volkswagen's shift in strategy for naming and developing the company’s electric vehicles.
The ID. Tiguan is actually intended to replace the two models ID.4 and ID.5. Volkswagen has stated that these two cars will likely be phased out of production after the arrival of the new product; an event expected to occur from the beginning of next year. Thus, Volkswagen’s new electric models will gradually use the familiar names of the company’s products instead of the numeric names of the ID family. The ID. Tiguan, after the ID. Polo and ID. Cross, is another model that follows this new approach.
Prior to the official unveiling, Volkswagen has released images of prototypes of this car. The vehicles have been tested on various roads and camouflage coverings can be seen on their bodies to keep design details hidden.
The importance of the ID. Tiguan for Volkswagen is very high; because the Tiguan is currently the best-selling model of the Volkswagen brand and also the entire Volkswagen Group worldwide. In just the past year, sales of the Tiguan and its sister model, the Tayron, have exceeded one million units.
Meanwhile, the ID.4 and ID.5 have together sold about 950,000 units since their launch in 2021. Therefore, replacing these two models with the ID. Tiguan will be a major challenge for Volkswagen.
