Facebook is the latest social network platform to give users more control over the content recommendation algorithm. Meta on Tuesday announced the launch of a new AI-based feature called “Your Algorithm” on the network; a feature that had previously been released on Instagram.
This tool allows Facebook users to describe their preferences in their own words and in natural language, thereby influencing the content they see in Feed and Reels. In this way, instead of relying entirely on automatic recommendations, users can directly communicate with the platform about the topics and content they want to see more or less of.
According to Meta, the goal of this feature is to make recommendations more relevant. Users can change their settings and interact with the ranking and post recommendation algorithms. Changes are applied to recommendations instantly.
The three-dot menu was also updated
Meta has also updated Facebook’s three-dot menu to make managing content settings directly from any post simpler. By opening this menu, users can access “Your Algorithm” or, by selecting the “Interested” and “Not Interested” options, indicate whether that content matches their taste.
Meta says Facebook may also ask follow-up questions to better understand a user’s interests. Users can explain what they want more or less of and thus play a role in refining recommendations.
A broader move at Meta
The introduction of “Your Algorithm” is part of Meta’s broader effort to increase users’ control over the social networking experience; at a time when AI is playing a larger role in content discovery. This move indicates a shift away from traditional recommendation systems that have shaped years of social networking experience and brings Facebook closer to streaming services, where users can personalize recommendations according to their preferences.
Feature history on Instagram and Threads
The rollout of this capability on Facebook is based on Meta’s earlier personalization efforts on its other platforms. Instagram first launched the feature for Reels in December 2025 and then officially introduced “Your Algorithm” in June (Khordad and Tir 1405), expanding customization options in Feed and Explore. Threads has also released a similar feature called “Dear Algo” that lets users influence their recommended content.
Additional notes
Why it matters: Recommendation algorithms have long been criticized because users had little control over them. Describing preferences in natural language narrows that gap.
Practical recommendation: For better results, write your preferences precisely and specifically (for example, favorite topics or styles) and use the “Interested” and “Not Interested” options consistently.
Privacy consideration: Using such a feature means providing more information about your tastes to the platform. Users should also review their account privacy settings.
