Harireh Coastal Complex

This complex is located at the far end of the current route for visiting the Harireh remains adjacent to the shore. Its approximate area is about 400 square meters. The identified architectural spaces include: rooms, spaces with grooved floors (chandol) or a date storage warehouse (central courtyard), open spaces (staircase to the upper floor, wells and channels that lead into the complex). All architectural spaces are built on the coral rock. The coastal complex consists of two separate eastern and western parts. The materials used in this complex are rubble stones, the island’s sedimentary and calcareous pebbles with marine lime mortar and powdered coral stones. In the rooms with grooved floors (chandol), a mortar composed of powdered coral stones, lime, and a type of sarooj was used. On the forecourt of the coastal complex on the rocky shore, which is approximately 4 to 5 meters above sea level, there are 4 wells and a stone staircase that goes down, all hand-carved. The diameter of these wells is often 2 meters and their depth reaches the sea level. Various theories exist regarding their use; among them: for easy access to seawater, for discharging wastewater, as an escape route in emergencies, for technical and installation use to provide ventilation in the coastal rock, and for connection with navigation and fishing and coral harvesting.
