The first Ferrari electric car hasn’t been delivered yet, but it sold for $40 million!

Ferrari set a staggering auction record with its first electric car, the Luce EV. The first production example of this car, known as “Chassis 0,” sold for $40 million at RM Sotheby’s Monterey auction; a figure more than 36 times the initial $1.1 million estimate and roughly 62 times Luce’s official price. Importantly, the entire sale amount will go to the Ferrari Foundation to be used for educational programs.

According to Eitna quoting Electrek, this car is a Tailor Made bespoke version and is finished in the unique “Madreperla Semi-Gloss” color that shifts from green to purple depending on the light. The interior also features Le Mans metallic leather in Perla with Grigio Corvara details. Despite the record-breaking sale, the buyer will not take delivery yet; Luce will return to Maranello for completion of the production process, and delivery is scheduled for the first quarter of 2027.

The $40 million price has made Luce one of the most expensive new cars in auction history. For comparison, a special Ferrari Daytona SP3 sold for $26 million last year. Also, a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO sold for $48.4 million in 2018.

Luce is priced at about $640,000 on the official price list, and limited-production ultra-luxury electric cars like the Rimac Nevera and Pininfarina Battista are priced around $2.2 to $2.5 million. Therefore, the $40 million price of this example more reflects the historical significance of Ferrari’s first electric car and its appeal to collectors than the vehicle’s intrinsic value.

Despite initial negative reactions to Luce, the entire 2026 production capacity of the car, fewer than 500 units, sold out before deliveries began. The record-breaking sale of the first example also shows that the Ferrari brand’s standing can still create extraordinary collectible value even in the electric car era.
