Apple is preparing to introduce the new generation of the iPhone; but unlike previous years, the iPhone 18 series will likely have a significant change in launch timing. According to published reports, the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max models will be introduced along with Apple's first foldable iPhone in fall 2026, while the release of the standard iPhone 18 model will be postponed to early 2027.
9to5Mac's report indicates the iPhone 18 Pro is set to see notable changes in several key areas including the camera, display design, connectivity, and battery life. Some of this information comes from tech leak sources and has not yet been confirmed by Apple.
The iPhone 18 Pro’s camera will be larger and more advanced
One of the most important potential changes to the iPhone 18 Pro relates to the main camera system. According to information published by leaker Fixed Focus Digital and cited by 9to5Mac, Apple will use a larger main camera module in this generation.
This change could cause the camera bump on the iPhone 18 Pro’s back panel to increase by more than 2 millimeters. Such a change suggests Apple is likely pursuing a serious hardware upgrade for iPhone imaging rather than relying solely on software optimizations.
Previous reports also mentioned the possibility of using a variable aperture in the iPhone 18 Pro’s main camera. This technology allows the camera to better control the amount of light reaching the sensor and provides greater flexibility for capturing images in different lighting conditions.
On the other hand, Apple may, for the first time, create a difference between the iPhone 18 Pro and the iPhone 18 Pro Max camera systems. According to existing reports, features such as 6x optical zoom and advanced prism technology with 5x refractive power may be offered exclusively on the Pro Max model.
In such a case, the iPhone 18 Pro will likely have a zoom range between 5x and 6x. Of course, these specifications remain rumors and cannot be considered final Apple product specifications.
Dynamic Island will become smaller
The next significant change concerns the front of the phone. According to published reports, Apple is exploring a way to make the Dynamic Island smaller on the iPhone 18 Pro models.
It is said that some components related to Face ID technology could be moved under the display. If this plan is realized, the size of the Dynamic Island would likely be reduced by about 35 percent and more of the display area would be available to the user.
However, this change does not mean the complete removal of the Dynamic Island. Current information only reports the relocation of some Face ID components and a reduction in this area’s size, and it is still unclear when Apple might place the selfie camera and all face-recognition components fully under the display.
The iPhone 18 Pro will be equipped with Apple’s proprietary modem
Another major change for this generation is reducing Apple’s dependence on Qualcomm for cellular connectivity. The iPhone 18 Pro is expected to be equipped with Apple’s new proprietary modem, named C2.
Apple has invested heavily in developing its own modem in recent years, and the iPhone 18 Pro could be one of the most important steps in this transition. Apple may also make changes to the iPhone 18 Pro’s exterior design. One rumor suggests the addition of a new color named something like Dark Cherry or Burgundy.
This color would fall within the dark red spectrum with a tinge of brown and could give the Pro models a different appearance compared to their usual colors. However, the final color options for the iPhone 18 Pro cannot be confirmed until the official device announcement.
When will the iPhone 18 be unveiled?
As of August 24 (Shahrivar 2), Apple had not yet announced an official date for the iPhone 18 launch event. However, based on Apple’s past event patterns, 9to5Mac proposed Wednesday, September 9, 2026 (Shahrivar 18) as one of the most likely dates for introducing the new iPhone generation.
In this scenario, pre-orders for the new iPhones could begin on September 11 or 12 (Shahrivar 20 or 21) and their availability could start on September 18 (Shahrivar 27). Nonetheless, all of these dates remain tentative until Apple’s official announcement.
The standard iPhone 18 will likely not be released this year
The most important change in Apple’s launch strategy concerns the standard iPhone 18. According to current reports, the iPhone 18 will not be part of this fall’s event, and Apple intends to delay its release to early 2027.
Accordingly, the standard iPhone 18 will likely be introduced alongside the iPhone 18e and iPhone Air 2 in the first half of 2027. In contrast, the fall 2026 event will likely be dedicated to the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and Apple’s first foldable phone; a product that may be introduced as the iPhone Ultra.
