One of the common questions among people seeking weight loss concerns the fate of the fats lost during slimming diets. Nutritionists and physiologists emphasize that fat never turns into muscle and is not simply erased or destroyed; rather, it follows a specific chemical pathway.

According to physiological principles, when the body's energy expenditure exceeds the energy received from food, the body inevitably turns to its energy reserves. With continued energy deficit, fats serve as the main fuel source and are broken down into simpler components through a process known as "beta-oxidation." The end products of this chemical reaction consist mainly of carbon dioxide and water.

According to HuffPost and documented scientific findings, about eighty-four percent of the lost fat mass is ultimately converted to carbon dioxide and exits the body via the lungs during exhalation. The remainder, that is sixteen percent, becomes water, which is mainly eliminated through urine and sweat.

This finding correctly confirms the common saying "we exhale fat"; although this phrase, rather than being merely metaphorical, has a completely chemical interpretation: the carbon atoms in fat molecules ultimately leave the body as carbon dioxide gas through the respiratory route.

However, a distinction must be made between weight loss due to fat elimination and weight loss due to water loss. When a person sweats heavily during intense exercise or in environments like a sauna, rapid weight loss is often temporary and mainly due to reduction of body water; the water, once fluids are replenished, returns the weight to its previous level. This phenomenon is fundamentally different from permanent fat reduction.

According to ITNA, it is noteworthy that this physiological fact was not fully clear to many doctors and specialists until 2014, when a study by Australian researchers was published and for the first time described and proved the precise and definitive pathway by which fat leaves the body. This research represents a milestone in public and professional understanding of fat metabolism.
