Results of a scientific study warn that the common eating habit among computer users (that is, eating snacks while typing on the keyboard) can turn this essential device into a conducive environment for the growth and reproduction of bacteria.
If you are also among those who enjoy eating chips or other snacks while replying to emails or composing texts, you might be better off taking a closer look at your keyboard. Microbiologists emphasize that typing immediately after eating, especially in cases where you use your hands instead of utensils, can be more unhygienic than imagined.
Scientists explained this phenomenon by stating that remnants of saliva may be transferred to the key surfaces through the fingers, and when these particles combine with food crumbs on the keyboard, they provide a suitable substrate for the formation of what is colloquially called a “bacteria cafe.” It is worth noting that some bacterial species can remain alive on keyboard surfaces for several days, and this makes attention to the hygiene of this device even more necessary.
Based on the recommendations presented in this study, preventive measures are very simple yet effective: keeping hand sanitizer or wet wipes by the desk, thoroughly washing hands after eating, and regularly cleaning the keyboard with appropriate disinfectants are among the actions that can prevent the keyboard from turning into a hotspot for bacterial accumulation.
