Apple's Foldable iPhone and a Mysterious Stylus; Fragile Display Is the Main Obstacle

The Apple foldable iPhone, expected to be unveiled in September 2026, may support a new accessory in the future: a version of the Apple Pencil.

According to ITna citing TechSpot, based on information published by Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, Apple has internally designed and tested a prototype of this stylus; however, it is not yet clear whether this product will ultimately reach the market.

It is said the stylus tested for the iPhone Fold is shorter than the iPad-specific version. The reason given is the device’s more limited height. The stylus apparently attaches to the phone magnetically, and this attachment could be used for holding and charging the stylus.

Functionally, using a stylus on a foldable iPhone is not that surprising. The larger display of the phone when open can offer an experience close to a small tablet, and the stylus could be useful for note-taking, drawing, or performing some precise tasks. However, foldable displays remain one of the main obstacles to stylus use.

Many foldable displays are made from plastic layers and are more sensitive compared to traditional glass displays. Constant contact of a stylus with a hard tip can increase the risk of scratches or damage to the display surface. Therefore, for Apple to release such a product, it must ensure the foldable iPhone display can withstand the pressure and everyday use of a stylus.

On the other hand, offering an Apple Pencil for the iPhone is an interesting contrast to Apple’s historical approach. When introducing the first iPhone in 2007, Steve Jobs emphasized that users did not need a stylus and that the iPhone’s touch interface should be used with a finger. Now, nearly two decades later, adding a stylus to the iPhone family could represent a notable shift in approach.

However, the likelihood that this stylus will be launched simultaneously with Apple’s foldable iPhone is not very high. Reports even suggest the tested prototype will likely remain an internal project for now. Foldable displays still need to become more durable for continuous stylus use to become a safe and reliable experience.

Apple is set to introduce its first foldable iPhone at the September 9 event, and by then it will be clear whether the company plans to announce a stylus or other special accessories for its foldable phone.
