If Extraterrestrial Life Is Found, How Will the World Change? 3 Key Scenarios

The discovery of life beyond Earth might be one of the greatest scientific achievements in human history; but its consequences will likely not be limited to laboratories and research centers. Even if the first signs of extraterrestrial life are limited to a few unknown microbes, this discovery could change the scientific, political, and security equations of the world.

For years, science-fiction films have portrayed humanity's encounter with extraterrestrials as intelligent civilizations and advanced beings. However, from a scientific perspective, one of the most likely first pieces of evidence for life beyond Earth could be much simpler: the discovery of microbial life at another point in the solar system or beyond.

Nevertheless, such a discovery would by no means be a simple event. Researchers believe that confirming the existence of extraterrestrial life could affect how countries interact with one another, governments' approaches to space activities, and even laws regarding ownership of and access to extraterrestrial resources.

Searching for life in the solar system

In recent years, several space missions have been carried out to study environments that might have the necessary conditions for the formation or survival of life. NASA's Europa Clipper mission and the European Space Agency's JUICE mission are among the projects examining Jupiter's icy moons and the potentially suitable conditions for life.

On the other hand, analysis of samples returned from the Ryugu asteroid has also revealed organic compounds related to the basic chemistry of life. These findings do not mean the discovery of life, but they indicate that the raw materials related to biological processes can exist in various parts of the solar system.

But the more important question arises when scientists can definitively confirm the existence of extraterrestrial life: what will countries do with such a discovery?

Based on perspectives presented by researchers, at least three main scenarios can be imagined for the era after such a discovery.

Scenario one; international cooperation

The first possibility is the formation of broad cooperation among countries. In this scenario, governments would collaborate to exchange scientific data, coordinate research, and draft common rules regarding how to handle extraterrestrial samples and objects.

Such a model could be similar to international collaborations in projects like the International Space Station or global networks for identifying and monitoring potentially hazardous asteroids.

If the first sign of extraterrestrial life is discovered, cooperation could help countries turn the discovery into a global scientific project rather than a geopolitical competition.

Scenario two; the start of a new space race

The second scenario is competition; a scenario that could have far more complex consequences.

Some countries might view extraterrestrial life or biological materials associated with it as an opportunity to gain scientific, economic, or even military superiority. If it turns out that an extraterrestrial substance or organism possesses properties with potential applications in medicine, agriculture, energy, or other technological fields, access to it could become a strategic issue.

In such circumstances, governments and even private companies might compete to access samples, information, and potential off-Earth resources; a competition that could create a new form of space geopolitics.

Scenario three; isolation and strict restriction

But the third scenario is entirely different: isolation.

If there is any chance of transferring an unknown biological material to Earth, even if the risk is very low, governments may impose strict restrictions on the transfer and sharing of samples to prevent potential consequences.

Concerns about unknown biological, health, or environmental risks could lead countries to provide related information and samples only to a very limited number of research centers. In such a situation, the main issue would no longer be merely the discovery of life; rather, how to contain and manage its consequences would become the priority.

Artificial intelligence could complicate the equation

According to EarthSky, the emergence of technologies such as artificial intelligence and bioengineering could complicate decisions about the first evidence of extraterrestrial life.

These technologies increase humanity's ability to detect, analyze, and even modify or exploit biological materials and structures. Therefore, if scientists one day encounter an unknown form of life, the issue will not only be understanding its nature; the question will also arise whether humans should be able to alter it or use its properties.

The main issue may not be the discovery itself

The discovery of extraterrestrial life will undoubtedly be one of the most important milestones in the history of science, but the real challenge may lie not in finding the first sign of life, but in how humanity reacts to that discovery.

Researchers believe the world should not wait for the first definitive discovery and then start thinking about drafting rules. Simulating possible scenarios, designing mechanisms for international cooperation, and creating clear laws about samples, data, and technologies related to extraterrestrial life can begin now.

Because the day the first definitive sign of life beyond Earth is found, it will likely not only mark the start of a new chapter in the history of science; it may also mark the beginning of a new era in international politics and space competition.
