Samsung and OpenAI have expanded their cooperation in next-generation chips and enterprise use of artificial intelligence.
According to Eetna citing Techspot, Harrison Kim, CEO of OpenAI Korea, stated that the two companies' collaboration on producing and researching next-generation chips is one of the most important parts of their growing relationship. However, technical details of the chips or Samsung's exact role in the project have not been announced.
This collaboration has taken shape as OpenAI seeks to develop dedicated hardware infrastructure to handle the rapid growth of its AI services. OpenAI unveiled the custom chip Jalapeno in June, designed in collaboration with Broadcom for AI inference processing and slated to be manufactured by TSMC.
One of the most likely areas of collaboration with Samsung is advanced memory used in AI systems. Large AI models require very high memory capacity and bandwidth for fast processing, especially in data centers that must respond to many users simultaneously. OpenAI expects that as AI system compute power increases, demand for advanced memories will also rise.
Samsung and SK Hynix had previously declared their readiness to supply memory chips needed for OpenAI's Stargate project. According to Kim, collaboration with South Korean semiconductor companies is one of OpenAI's priorities in the country.
On the other hand, Samsung itself is one of OpenAI's largest enterprise customers. Samsung employees in South Korea and other markets use ChatGPT for research and development, marketing, and sales. Samsung has also allowed employees in the Device eXperience division to use ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Claude for work activities.
The growth of enterprise use of ChatGPT in South Korea has also been significant. The number of enterprise users of ChatGPT Enterprise in companies and institutions in the country at the end of August was about 28 times higher than a year earlier. Businesses now use AI in areas such as legal affairs, sales, finance, marketing, and operations.
With the release of GPT-6 Astra, OpenAI expects use of its products to increase further; a development that could also boost demand for processing chips and advanced memories.
