Huawei has painted an ambitious picture of the future of the internet and artificial intelligence. According to the company's latest report titled "Intelligent World 2035: Turning Vision into Action," by 2035 AI agents could account for more than 90 percent of global AI token traffic; meaning that the bulk of processing and exchange of information related to intelligent systems, instead of direct human interaction with software, will be carried out by automated agents.

In this forecast, an AI agent refers to a system that can perceive its surrounding environment, reason about available information, make decisions, invoke external tools, and in some cases perform various tasks without direct human intervention. This capability causes the volume of interactions of these systems to be much greater than the traditional pattern of using software.

Huawei estimates that annual consumption of AI tokens will be about 100,000 times the current level by 2035. Tokens are the processing units used by AI models to receive and produce information, and their sharp increase in consumption will place significant pressure on data centers, communication networks, and computing infrastructures.

The company has also reiterated its previous estimate regarding the number of AI agents. According to this estimate, about 900 billion AI agents will be active worldwide by 2035; a figure roughly 100 times the human population projected for that time. Huawei refers to this transformation in its report with the concept of the "Internet of Agents"; an environment in which communication networks, in addition to connecting humans and devices, must also connect billions of software agents to each other.

Such a change will also transform network requirements. Unlike many current internet applications, AI agents can continuously monitor the environment, receive data, perform reasoning, invoke various tools, and receive the outcomes of their actions. For this reason, Huawei believes future networks must evolve from infrastructures that merely move data to networks designed for continuous transfer and processing of tokens.

Increased demand for computation is another consequence of this transformation. In its new report Huawei suggests that the size of compute clusters should increase about 100-fold by 2035 and the cost of performing tasks by AI agents should decrease by roughly a thousandfold. The company also emphasizes the development of new computing architectures and storage and memory systems tailored to the needs of intelligent agents.

Security is also given a special place in this vision. The more autonomy AI agents gain to make decisions and use external tools, the more important their protection and access control will become. Huawei has introduced the development of security and privacy solutions for automated agents as one of the ten key pillars needed to realize an intelligent world. The company has previously spoken of using AI agents in cybersecurity operations and developing solutions such as AI-based firewalls.

Huawei also believes that moving AI from the digital world to the physical world is one of the important steps toward achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI). According to the company's view, combining linguistic intelligence, scientific intelligence, and embodied intelligence could lead to the development of systems capable of performing a wider range of tasks.

These predictions are presented within the framework of the report Intelligent World 2035: Turning Vision into Action, which Huawei published in September 2026. The new report, in addition to AI agents, examines topics such as computing infrastructures, intelligent networks, storage, chips, smart vehicles, data center energy consumption, and security as key domains for the coming decade.
