The iPhone 18 Pro Max still retains the familiar design language of previous iPhone generations on the surface, but Apple has made significant changes to its hardware and camera capabilities. This phone, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro, is offered in new Wine and Ice colors, and the rear glass window also matches the body color more closely.
According to ETNA via Phonearena, one of the most important changes in the iPhone 18 Pro Max is the use of the 2nm A20 Pro chip. Apple has stated this chip can deliver up to 20% more CPU performance, up to 40% more GPU performance, and up to 40% more sustained performance compared to the A19 Pro. The vapor chamber cooling system has also been improved so the phone can maintain high performance for longer when running heavy games, recording 4K video, and performing on-device AI processing, and experience less thermal throttling.
The battery is another important part of the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Apple has promised this phone will last up to 45 hours of video playback; that is 6 hours more than the previous generation. The iPhone 18 Pro is also expected to have battery life similar to the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

But perhaps the most exciting change concerns the camera. The 48-megapixel main camera of the iPhone 18 Pro Max is now equipped with a four-step variable aperture. This feature allows better control of incoming light and depth of field, giving users more freedom to capture creative images.
Apple has also finally added a professional mode to the default Camera app. The “Professional Controls” feature allows the user to manually adjust settings such as shutter speed, aperture, ISO, and white balance. As a result, the iPhone 18 Pro Max, in addition to greater hardware power, gives mobile photographers much broader control.
Overall, the iPhone 18 Pro Max may not be revolutionary in appearance, but it includes a set of practical improvements in performance, cooling, battery, and camera that make it a more complete and mature generation of Apple’s flagship.
