Google raised Pixel 10 price by $100; chip crisis deepens

Google has increased the price of the Pixel 10 smartphone by $100 just seven months after launch, bringing the device's price to $599. This price increase comes as the electronics market faces rising memory chip costs and shortages in some key components. Conditions that could affect final consumer product prices in coming months.

The Pixel 10a initially entered the market as a budget option in Google's phone lineup, but the price hike narrowed its gap with more expensive models. Notably, this phone is offered with limited changes and improvements compared to the Pixel 9a, and even uses chips that are not from the latest generations of manufacturers.

The Pixel 10a is powered by the integrated Tensor J4 processor, a chip introduced two years ago. By contrast, Google has used newer processors in its flagship phones, mainly to boost performance, processing capabilities, and camera features. Therefore the Pixel 10a price increase does not necessarily mean more powerful hardware or a set of new features for this phone.

This price rise also occurs as heavy pressure on memory chips becomes one of the most important issues in the electronics industry. Memory chips are key components of smartphones, computers, and many electronic products, and their costs can directly or indirectly affect the final prices of products.

In the same conditions, Samsung this week raised the prices of most Galaxy S26 series models by $100. In other markets, Apple also launched its new iPhones at higher prices than the previous generation. The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max introduced last month were priced higher compared to prior models, and some older models saw their prices adjusted.

In the flagship segment, Google's pricing has also followed this trend. The Pixel 11 family that Google introduced in August last year was generally about $100 higher than the previous generation at launch. Prices for that family start at $899 and at the top end, the base foldable Pixel 11 Pro reaches $1,899.

According to Bloomberg, the smartphone price increases are happening amid reports that memory chips continue to put pressure on the consumer electronics market. This trend is not limited to smartphones and is raising component costs.

As a result, the $100 price increase can be seen as part of the consequences where even budget phones have not been spared from pressures on supply chains. The dollar price rise for this model, just months after launch, shows that changes in the chip and memory market can be passed directly to product prices that were previously offered as more affordable options.
