The crypto market in the third quarter of 2026 witnessed a notable rise in Bitcoin, but during the same period cyberattacks and security exploits also inflicted heavy damage on the industry.

According to ITNA citing CoinDesk, Bitcoin closed the third quarter with about 40 percent growth, outperforming many major market assets. The inflow of billions of dollars into Bitcoin-related exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and other tokens also helped market growth, and some altcoins experienced larger increases.

However, according to data from crypto security firm CertiK, 247 security incidents were recorded in the crypto industry in the third quarter, with total losses amounting to $1.26 billion. Total losses from attacks and security exploits since the start of the year have also reached $2.68 billion.

September 2026 was the worst month of the year in terms of security losses. In that month 99 incidents were recorded-the highest number since February 2025-and about $768.5 million in assets were stolen; a figure that is the largest monthly loss registered in 2026.

The significance of these attacks is not limited to the value of stolen assets. The recurrence of such incidents can damage the crypto industry's reputation, make institutional adoption more difficult, and increase oversight by regulators and custodial firms. At the same time, a large portion of new institutional capital is entering the market through more regulated and familiar instruments like ETFs, and many institutional investors do not interact directly with DeFi protocols.

Another concern is the limited insurance coverage in the market. According to CoinGecko's crypto security report, on-chain crypto insurance capacity has reached about $130.2 million, a 20.2 percent decrease compared to $163 million last year. This figure remains very limited compared to the value of at-risk assets.

Under these conditions, artificial intelligence (AI) has also created a new threat to crypto security. AI tools can accelerate the process of identifying vulnerabilities in smart contracts-work that previously might have taken a security engineer months of expertise. As a result, the time gap between discovering a flaw and exploiting it can shrink.

The likelihood of attacks involving AI agents is also increasing; including prompt injection attacks where hidden instructions can coerce an AI agent into performing actions contrary to a user's intent. Consequently, the crypto market's growth alongside increasing capital inflows continues to face a serious security challenge.
