Environmental controversy over Google's data center in Finland; 300 hectares of forest destroyed

Google has faced an environmental and regulatory challenge in expanding its data center infrastructure in Finland.

According to ITNA citing TechSpot, Google's local company in Finland, Tuike Finland Oy, began clearing a large portion of forest before completing the project's environmental assessment. Public reports indicate about 300 hectares of forest, roughly equivalent to nearly 420 football fields, have been cleared so far.

Finland's licensing and regulatory authority last month asked Tuike Finland to explain the actions taken. This company is responsible for executing Google's data center project in Finland; a project Google has said it intends to invest about €13 billion in to develop AI-Focused Infrastructure.

Under regulations, large infrastructure projects must assess their potential impacts on the environment and natural areas. However, the extensive forest clearing prior to a full assessment of the plan has raised concerns about how the project is being carried out and the possibility of harm to environmentally valuable areas.

In response to these criticisms, Google says the forest clearing operations were carried out fully in accordance with Finnish laws and regulations. The company also stated that the project site was carefully reviewed before operations began to prevent damage to areas with high environmental value.

However, Hanna Halmenpää, chair of the Finnish Nature Conservation Association, has presented a different account. According to her, satellite images show parts of areas that should have been protected have now been destroyed and leveled. She has asked Finland's regulatory authority to halt construction operations until it is determined whether the necessary permits were obtained for the forest clearing.

The significance of this case is not limited to Google's project. Large data centers require substantial land and energy, and the rapid development of AI infrastructure in various parts of the world has met increasing local opposition. This trend shows that the competition among tech companies to expand AI processing capacity can have significant consequences for the environment and local communities.
