Microsoft has warned that some PCs running older versions of Windows will lose access to the Windows Update service if security certificates are not updated, starting June 19, 2027.

According to ITna quoting TechSpot, this restriction applies to personal computers, workstations, and servers; however, enterprise devices that receive updates through Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) are exempt from this warning.

The certificates used by the Windows Update service have specific expiration dates and must be replaced before they expire to continue receiving monthly updates. According to Microsoft, Windows 11 25H2 and newer have updated certificates; but users of older versions must install certain security updates.

For Windows 11 24H2 and Windows Server 2025, installing the September 2025 security update or later is required. Other supported versions of Windows 11, Windows Server 2022, and supported versions of Windows 10 need the July 2026 security update or later. For these groups, the primary deadline is June 19, 2027. However, older enterprise releases such as Windows 10 Enterprise 2019, Windows Server 2019, and Windows Server 2016 that use long-term servicing channels must be updated by May 17, 2027.

Microsoft has also recommended that users of deprecated, unsupported Windows versions upgrade their operating systems.

Despite the importance of installing security updates, a history of faulty patches has made users wary. Some Windows 11 updates in recent months have caused issues with game performance, unexpected system reboots, problems with the Recycle Bin and OneDrive, and reduced performance of NVIDIA GPUs. Therefore, users should check their Windows version and the security update status of their devices while keeping the announced deadlines in mind.
