Instagram has introduced a new feature called “First Draft” to simplify one of the most time-consuming stages of making Reels. Using automatic editing, this feature trims selected video clips, removes pauses, and pieces together the best moments into an initial draft.

According to ITNA, Instagram has stated that First Draft can prepare the first version of a video in under 10 seconds. This capability can reduce the time required for editing and make video creation easier for users who do not have much experience with editing software.

Thus, content creators can start their work with an automatic draft instead of manually editing each clip, and then make the desired changes to it.

First Draft launches on iPhone first

The First Draft feature will be available initially on iPhone. Users can access this feature directly through Instagram’s camera while recording video, or after selecting several clips from the Reels gallery.

Although this capability is not entirely new technologically, similar tools have been offered in other products before. For example, the Quick Cuts tool in Adobe Firefly and the Auto Cut feature in CapCut can perform part of the video editing process automatically.

However, having such a tool directly within Instagram means creators will be less likely to need to transfer their videos to separate editing software to prepare Reels.

Instagram introduces more tools for creators

Over the past year, Instagram has introduced several new tools for creators. One of these features is the “Replace Audio” tool, which allows users to change the music of feed posts and existing carousel posts without deleting and reposting them.

The company is also preparing a new AI assistant for its video editing app, Edits.

According to TechCrunch, Instagram has also tested another feature called “Series.” This feature allows creators to group related Reels so audiences can watch them in a specified order. The goal of this feature is to turn short, separate videos into more structured content.

First Draft announced as Adam Mosseri testifies in court

The announcement of First Draft came on the same day that Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, was scheduled to testify in a court case about Meta’s social media addiction.

In that case, Meta is accused of designing Instagram and Facebook in ways that compel children to use the platforms, without giving sufficient attention to the potential harms of these services. Meta has denied these allegations.
