Acer CEO: Computer prices may start falling from 2027

The price of personal computers, which has risen due to a shortage of RAM, may begin a downward trend in late 2027.

According to ITna quoting Techspot, this prediction was made by Jason Chen, Acer's CEO, and contrasts with estimates from executives at some of the world's largest memory manufacturers who believe the supply crisis may continue until 2030 or even longer.

Since last year, the sharp rise in demand for AI infrastructure and data centers has absorbed a large part of memory production capacity. This situation has significantly increased the price of dynamic memory chips or RAM, and according to the reported account, the price of dynamic RAM has increased by about five times during this period.

The increase in memory costs has also spread to various products including personal computers, smartphones, graphics cards and game consoles, and has even affected demand for processors and motherboards.

However, companies active in the memory industry do not agree on when the crisis will end.

Micron had predicted that the memory shortage would continue beyond 2027. The CEO of SK Hynix also expects the shortage to peak in 2027 and for constrained supply to continue until 2030. The head of Adata has even deemed a further decade of price increases possible.

Jason Chen has a different view and believes some of these long-term forecasts may have been made to preserve the high profit margins of memory manufacturers.

According to him, the supply of many types of RAM and SSD memory is now largely aligned with demand, and the main problem remains in higher-end, faster parts, including advanced DDR5 modules.

The Acer CEO still expects PC prices to rise between 5 and 20 percent later this year, with the trend peaking in the first half of 2027.

After that, the introduction of cheaper production capacity, especially from Chinese companies such as CXMT, could pave the way for lower memory prices and therefore lower PC prices.
