Greek Ship

In the west of the island, the vessel known as the **Greek Ship** ran aground on Kish’s azure shores. This ship was built in 1322 SH by the William Hamilton company at the Port of Glasgow in Scotland (displacement 7061 tons, length 136 metres). On 4 Mordad 1345 while returning from Iran to Greece it ran aground near the village of Baghu; eighty days of attempts by the Dutch tug “Orinoco” and several other efforts to pull it free were unsuccessful, the cargo was discharged and according to Lloyd’s of London insurance records it was then Greek-owned under the name **Koulaaf**. The ship had previously borne the names “Shipur Emperator”, “Naturalist” and between 1338 SH and one year before running aground operated in the fleet of Iran Shipping Lines under the names “Sirus Fars” and “Hamedan”. Passage of time and corrosion have caused the lower part of the ship to rot in the water and there is a possibility it may collapse. Watching the sunset behind the Greek Ship over the waters of the Persian Gulf is a famous and memorable sight. The Greek Ship Coastal Park is under construction on a plot of **60,000 square metres**, and facilities planned around the ship include an amphitheatre, cafeteria, Iranian and Lebanese restaurants, snack booths and rental stations for skates, bicycles and sports products.
