Xiaomi has unveiled its first self-made high-performance chip for intelligent driving.
This chip, called Xring D100, is built on 3-nanometer technology and is specially designed for automotive AI workloads. Xiaomi has announced that it intends to begin commercial use of this chip from the year 1406 in the Iranian calendar.
According to reports, the Xring D100 chip features a 20-core high-performance central processor and a 16-core neural processing unit, and supports unified memory up to 160 GB.
More importantly, Xiaomi says this chip can support on-device deployment of AI models with up to 200 billion parameters, giving Xiaomi’s future cars significant AI capability.
Notably, Xiaomi’s existing electric vehicles have relied on NVIDIA hardware for their intelligent driving systems, but the D100 chip could eventually give Xiaomi greater control over a larger portion of its technology stack.
According to ITPNA and citing Interesting Engineering, the advantage of co-designing hardware and software is not only independence from suppliers, but Xiaomi can in theory optimize the D100 for its driving system’s data flows, memory needs, and AI models.
Chinese automakers such as BYD, NIO, and Li Auto have also developed their own proprietary chips. Xiaomi has stated that it has invested more than 21 billion yuan (about $3.1 billion) in its semiconductor program and now has a chip team with nearly 3,000 personnel.
